Now that we are starting to experience the humid heat that summer brings, particularly to Georgia, you may find that your backyard isn’t as enjoyable as you hope it would be. Its not fun entertaining guests in a plain, no-shade backyard. Here are a few simple ideas to make your backyard perfect for relaxing and entertaining!
When it’s hot, nothing feels better than being able to relax in a nice spot of shade. If you don’t have trees or other objects to obstruct the sun, then build your own! Whether it be a gazebo, a pergola, or large umbrella, scale it to the right size to fit your yard and budget. Sunsails are also a nice inexpensive option to provide you plenty of shade in mid-summer.
What better time to entertain then early evening. Install some fancy and strategic lights to keep the party going until whatever time you want! Also if you have landscaped flower beds, install some solar spot lights to enhance your view at night. Home Depot and Lowes both offer plenty of backyard DIY lighting options.
Pathways are great for splitting up your yard and creating visual interest especially between flower beds. Choose a material for your pathway that fits your needs and looks great with the rest of the yard.
Soothing water sounds are a great addition to any backyard. You can make a little waterfall, a small stream, a small pond with a water feature, or just install a simple pre-fabricated fountain system.
Adding and outdoor fireplace or fire pit is the perfect option for your summer evening entertainment. If you have a small pre-built fireplace then consider buying some color changing fire crystals for an extra edge. They make the flames change color and will both wow the kids and impress the adults. If you want to be extra creative, choose colors that match your furniture and decorations.
Make sure you add different size and shape flower planters throughout your landscape. Planters help give your garden extra character as well as height and depth. If you need more light at night, consider coating your planters in glow-in-the-dark paint and watch as they light up! This idea is both stylistically more appealing than normal lights and also makes for a fun and unique backyard feature!
After a long day of work and taking care of the kids, a hammock is just the thing that every parent needs! Hang it somewhere near shade so you don’t get constantly blasted by the sun.
Put a little creativity in your backyard with all sorts of fun art projects! They can be birdhouses, colorful stepping stones, wall paint, or even wall art! If you have kids you can also consider a painted rock garden or a fairy garden. Just make it fun and creative!
If you don’t live near the beach, then just build one! Make your own backyard beach with some sand, beach plants, and other items! If you’re especially creative, you can add sitting areas and a fire feature. If you have a pool, make it near the pool so it has the same exact feel of an actual beach!
Sometimes we just need to get away from the world and relax a bit. Build a privacy area where you can retreat and take a few breaths of the beautiful summer air without being bothered. Use trees or shrubs, curtains, fencing, shades, or any other material to get as private as you want.
